Stephen Strasburg Signs Club-Record Contract

Former Nationals Ace Inks $245 Million Deal

Seven-Year Agreement Marks End of MLB Career

Stephen Strasburg, the former Washington Nationals pitcher, has signed a club-record contract worth $245 million over seven years. This marks the end of Strasburg's Major League Baseball (MLB) career, as he last pitched in 2022.

Strasburg's contract is the largest in Nationals history and the first time the team has offered a player a deal worth more than $200 million. The agreement comes after Strasburg missed the entire 2022 season with a stress reaction in his thoracic spine and was limited to five games in 2021 due to thoracic outlet syndrome.

Over his 13-year MLB career, Strasburg accumulated 113 wins, 1,723 strikeouts, a 3.24 earned run average (ERA), a 1.096 WHIP, and a 3.23 K/BB ratio. He was the first overall pick in the 2009 draft and started 247 games in his MLB career.

Despite missing significant time with injuries, Strasburg remains one of the most accomplished pitchers of his generation. He was a three-time All-Star, helped the Nationals win the World Series in 2019, and was named the World Series MVP that year.

The Nationals have not announced how Strasburg's contract will impact their future payroll or roster construction. However, the signing is a clear indication that the team is committed to building a competitive team for the 2023 season and beyond.
